Moving towards net zero cities

With funding from the Swedish Energy Agency for the purpose of internationalizing a drive towards carbon neutrality, UN Habitat launched a feasibility study in five middle-income countries, for which Bantu Design & Research reported on South Africa.

Through a combination of desk research including an in-depth policy study, liaising with experts in the renewable energy sector, and leveraging our team’s expertise in sustainable urbanism, we provided a comprehensive study on the possibilities and barriers of carbon-neutral renewable energy issues in South Africa, and especially in South African cities. Recommendations included a focus on business models and small tech solutions to amplify an existing renewable energy market and get around institutional policy barriers.
