Re-orienting the car-based city towards sustainable mobility
As part of the Global Future Cities Programme under the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s (UK FCO) Prosperity Fund, UN-Habitat, the UK FCO, and City of Tshwane (CoT) partnered to better prepare guidelines for the improvement of the mobility system in Tshwane/ Pretoria, with an emphasis on public transport and non-motorized transport (NMT). Bantu acted as UN Habitat’s urban advisor, providing research, graphic design, client engagement, and technical assistance in compiling a broad range of recommendations for the City.
The findings recommended a reorganisation of transport management, the rollout of small-scale pilot projects, and the reworking of urban design guidelines. gathering, problem finding & solving using a mix of interactive, participatory sessions, diversified in terms of both the public addressed and the engagement methods, including:
A Participatory Charette, entitled ‘Sustainable Mobility Strategies,’ involving participants from various government entities, academic institutions, and the private sector;
An Online Survey, developed as a means of gaining input from a wider audience;
Online Group Interviews, in small groups, involving technical staff CoT, representatives from academia, development partners, and UN-Habitat;
Policy Review, focused on finding gaps between related policies to be addressed;
An Open Street & Placemaking Event including various streets activation and public space activities;
Expert Meetings with CoT officials and other partners in public transport and NMT improvement, following the Open Street Event;
Review and inputs on two ToRs being launched by CoT in areas related to the project.
