Holistically defining health care through design

Going beyond the typical practice of architecture, this project uses the construction of a hospital in a rural district of Lesotho as a vehicle for a larger impact strategy, leveraging nature-based resource management strategies and socio-economic development as inputs into the construction process.  Stemming from the Semonkong Rural Development Framework and Impact Strategy, a gender-balanced, equal-opportunity employment and material procurement strategy was developed.  By utilizing indigenous knowledges already embedded in the community, the project seeks to use construction expenditures as an investment into the local economy, relating the process to longer-term ecological, agricultural and management goals.  Sustainable design principles of passive thermal control, rainwater harvesting, food production and on-site water treatment are incorporated into the design.  The hospital includes a “public interface” space at its entrance, designed as a safe space for families and children, with play areas and a small community marketplace.
