Rethinking design education for the next generation
An international research effort in East Africa for the Aga Khan University (AKU), this project provided the scoping and needs assessment for a new school of architecture and human settlements slated for AKU’s future Arusha campus. The research established the basis for an integrated human settlements education, reporting on the untapped potential for innovative design and planning methods, and a pedagogy for achieving it.
The report provided the basis for a larger ‘thinking group” - composed of an international team of renowned architects, engineers, urban planners and academics – to provide detailed strategies for the school’s development. Recommendations included a focus on participatory methodologies for human settlement development, a vocal engagement of the school, and a research- and data-based approach to architecture and urbanism.
